photoblog image Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air

I went to a multi-day wedding during my trip to Kolkata. This photo is from the Sindoor Daan ceremony. In a traditional Bengali wedding, the groom places the sindoor or vermilion in the part of the bride's hair. The groom does this three times and I gather that he is supposed to do this without looking (hence in this photo you can see that he has made a bit of a mess). The bride will then wear the vermilion in her part as long as she is married although I believe many these days choose not to. This is one of my favorite parts of the entire ceremony and also one of the most important as I understand it.

A beautiful and "personal" capture here with great color. Thank you for the narrative, shedding light on an interesting tradition. Does this mean she no longer shampoos her hair?
nice shot, and a snapshot of another culture..
Cheers

A wonderful close up of this important part of the ceremony. The portrait is a striking image. Very well done.
I wonder who is responsible for the intricate face painting; certainly not the groom, perhaps someone from the wedding party?

This is a beautiful shot, Charles.
That artistry above her eyebrows is amazing Charles, no doubt it has some special significance.

L'Inde est vraiment le pays le plus extraordinaire pour les photographe, j'ai parcouru le Tamil Nadu de Madras à Rameshwaram... un véritable enchantement de couleurs.
