photoblog image Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air

The 2nd photo in my Valentine's series. This was also taken during the wedding I went to in Kolkata.

During a Bengali ceremony, seven circles are drawn in a row on the floor and a cylindrical stone is placed by the first circle. The bride stands in front as you see here and the groom stands behind her. The couple then takes seven ceremonial steps together. The bride has one foot balanced on the stone. The groom then nudges the stone so that she rolls forward while she then places her other foot into the next circle. Each step represents something else and the idea is that the couple takes their first steps together into their new life.

Hello, thank you to discover these traditions through your explanations and with these beautiful images. Good day.
What a lovely and serene image. Great catch!
A charming image, Charles; warm, vibrant colors and a romantic subject; ideal valentine material. Well done!
A beautiful wedding, a really warm feel.
Wow...

I guessed it's in India, right?

There's always something in each photograph!
Lovely...and the garland of flowers.
It is strange how different cultures around the world have different rituals at weddings. This is one I have never heard of before.

Thanks for the interesting notes. I know nothing about this culture so good to learn something of it. Very different to a Western wedding.

Looks like a wedding photo. Great capture.
Your words add so much to the presentation of this charming image. A culture so far removed from own, and fascinating to my eyes.

Don't you just love the ceremonies of other cultures, Charles! This is especially meaningful after just being married myself!
It's sentimental love is universal.

beautiful detail and colours
great series.
It seems to me that the bride is the main player here, she is the one decorated all over, practically shining with colours....while the husband plays the part of the shadow...
i love the idea of first steps. what a beautiful way to begin married life.
i love also the flowers and colors on the bride- she is beautiful.
