photoblog image Flower Market

Flower Market

I wanted to open up the scene a bit more to give you an idea just how big the flower market is. This shot still doesn't convey its size or just how many flowers you will find. The path extends close to a mile along the river, the entire distance filled with sellers like these. The majority, as you can see, are selling marigolds. This shot was taken from the massive Howrah Bridge which crosses the Hooghly River.

On the right you can see a huge, smoldering pile of greens. This pile seemed to be a debris pile, perhaps leaves and stems that had been stripped away in the making of various arrangements.

For more shots from the Kolkata flower market look here.

yes again such lovely vivid colors, and so many people and hard to comprehend it going for almost a mile down the river
Beautiful view on the market from above. Very colorful again.

A nice overhead shot which captures the colors of the peoples' clothing as well. It's interesting to note how the merigolds seem to take on a different texture from a distance, as if these are very large ropes.

With a limited choice in colors, I wonder what makes one seller better than the other.

I really appreciate this wider view with all the flowers and sellers. Nicely done.
I like the contrast between the colorful and lively flower corner and the otherwise dull market life. Sweet shot !
Fabulous perspective! Never thought this could be such surprising!
How stunning. Those marigolds are so vivid. They seem like huge rolls of wool from this picture.

that is completely amazing!! but i can't help being concerned that alot of those flowers go to waste, i sure hope not!!! thank you for your very understanding comment on my blog, yes, i have blog ennui lol... i love photography, and i love getting comments, and i even love commenting back, but i DON'T like only getting comments because i commented on someone else's page, and if everybody else does that, waits and comments back, then so will i.. and i guess i'll see if people think my photos are worth it sad
Charles Dastodd: yeah, its hard to know how many of them might not be sold...but the reason I was told to go so early in the morning is that by midday most of this would be gone. So I suspect not too many will be left. smile

Now the sense of a busy market is becoming quite evident with a wider perspective. For now we can understand flower market is not just for fun but a serious business.

Looks like you were standing on top of a building. You captured a large area.
What an incredibly interesting place. I can't imagine life in that sort of congestion.
The heaps of flowers make such a contrast in colour to the way people are dressed!
Indians seem to be more in garlands, than in flower arrangements!
really nice to get a fuller view. such a fascinating place - i think i'd have a hard time leaving here.
Charles Dastodd: I definitely did not want to leave and now I am counting the days until I can go back!

A fine market scene with so many things to see and consider. Wonderful detail and color. A Fine large scene...well shot.
Extraordinaire ! Je me demande si ce sont des écheveaux de laine ou quoi ?
Belle journée Charles et merci de ton aimable visite

What a glorious vantage point from which to view the colour of this scene. Superbly observed, Charles and bursting with vibrancy.

Un marché avec des couleurs qui sautent bien aux yeux. On s'imagine bien l'ampleur de ce marché.

It's hard to believe there's a market for that many flowers, Charles, but apparently there is...day after day?!
Charles Dastodd: Yep, day after day after day!

A contract can not be more colorful, a real rainbow in the sky. Good day.
I'm amazed that there are so many sellers needed to satisfy customer demand. I'm also wondering how those garlands can be heaped like that without crushing the petals. Their colors really stand out against the drab earthen surroundings. Did you get some shots of the bridge as well, Charles?
Charles Dastodd: Yeah, its hard to imagine after walking down the path that these could be completely sold everyday. But then again, the Kolkata metropolitan area has 14 million people in it and I suspect this market serves just about that entire area.

I did not get a shot of the full bridge, unfortunately. Taking pictures of the Howrah Bridge is actually prohibited. If I had been able to get back further away down the river I would have, but the river is so crowded through the city that it is nearly impossible.
great series at the moment, very vivid
