photoblog image Along the Hooghly

Along the Hooghly

---------------------->I want to call attention to a new photoblogger here at Shutterchance that I think is doing incredible work documenting India. Check out Journey Basket. She has some really terrific images, definitely worth looking through her archive!

In this picture you can see another old, run down ghat along the Hooghly River, this one with a few people hanging out. You can see more shots from the Hooghly here. They are some of my favorite shots.

This one I like a lot.
Its the people and their bicycles and their discarded trash that really makes a story here, Charles.
Charles Dastodd: yes, trash, trash, everywhere I am afraid.

I love the warm tones you've been using. They really represent hot Indian weather very well.
Charles Dastodd: it does look warm, but I am afraid it was not at all! in fact we were quite chilly out on the water and this was taken on January 3 on a rather cool day.

Grandiose ce décor avec cette patine colorée sur la pierre.
such wonderful warm light in this one too. everyone seems so relaxed. i like that the two guys are looking right at the camera.
One of those beautifully crafted shots that could happily grace a professional book or magazine. The light is exquisite here, Charles.
Charles Dastodd: Thanks, very kind of you to say.
Amazing shot! That place looks like it could use a good cleaning, especially the lower left!
This is a brilliant capture. Beautiful colors and lines.

Thanks for the heads-up about Debby's work, Charles. That's very sweet of you.

In your image here I see the people I have been expecting...but still so few. It is more typical to have these steps teeming with bathers, right? It has such an immense feel to it. I've never been in real life but it's as though I can taste it all.
Charles Dastodd: Well there are numerous ghats up and down the river on both sides. Some were crowded, like at the religious sites, and others had a few people or no one. For example, this one:

Excellente composition qui se fonde sur la diagonale du format et sur les marches qui descendent vers le fleuve...Une lumière qui baigne magnifiquement ce lieu probablement sacré et massacré au vu des ordures qui flottent sur l'eau...
Bonne journée lumineuse et chaleureuse!

Hi Charles. Thank you for the warm welcome. This ghat reminds me of scenes from old Hindi films. The yellowish tint is good too. What's that 'S' on the pillar behind?
Charles Dastodd: No problem, Debby. I think that symbol might actually be a snake, although I am not sure.

I know little about India but I'm surprised not to see more people here. Again the colours are very special.
Charles Dastodd: There were many of these ghats up and down the river. The ones on the other side were very crowded, like this one:
