Mormon Temple

Salt Lake City is of course well known for the large population of Mormons, also known as the Latter Day Saints. This is the main temple located in downtown Salt Lake City on Temple Avenue. Although the grounds are open to visitors, the church is highly restrictive as to who they will allow inside.

Mormons?

Are they some species of migratory water bird, Charles?

Is this building some kind of communal nest?

Majestic building. Any church that restricts entry would make me a bit nervous. Beautiful shot.
Charles Dastodd: lol. right next to the temple here is the Tabernacle - home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Visitors are allowed inside there, but only members can enter the temple. It is a little strange, but I guess it might be analogous to Catholics not allowing non-Catholics to take communion. Every religion seems to have their "members-only" element smile

Yes, they are very secretive!
And I believe they hold millions of people's genealogy round the world!
Beautiful shot of this temple!
Happy Sunday!

Very beautiful architecture, a pity that the entry is not allowed. Good Sunday.
The trees give this building scale. It's huge. Great shot Charles

Impressive church.
There was a big scandal with the Mormons years ago...
No wonder they are quite secretive.

I really like how you've taken this photo from a side angle -- it gives the viewer a much better understanding of the building's presence and magnificence. The sky is perfectly exposed.
A good shot of the building Charles. It is the secrecy about this lot that is the off-putting thing.

I've walked through the ground here once. They tried to talk to us about the religion but we walked on through on our way to lunch.
Charles Dastodd: i was surprised by how many missionaries were wandering the grounds. it was quite a force!

Ce n'est pas un édifice comme celui-là qui m'incitera à devenir mormon...

Thanks for yoru comments on my blog (http://davidikus.blogspot.com). This building looks very austere to say the least. Nice angle!
Excellent capture, you really were able to so the size of the building. Just catching up with you and your Utah series is very nice!
Now that's what I call a strange religion Charles. In England, christians openly welcome all visitors to their place of worship. Fine building though
