Costa Rican Wildlife

A possum we encountered at Arenal, Costa Rica's active volcano. We were driving up a mountain to an observatory to see the volcano erupting in the middle of the night when our driver saw this guy scurrying along the power lines. We pulled over and I managed to get a few pictures of him in the dark. Here he is on top of a telephone poll. Unfortunately, after I got his picture we got back into the van but the van was stuck in the ditch. One of the wheels was high ended off the ground and so it wouldn't go forward. A couple of us tried pushing and finally the driver got out and we all tried putting rocks and dirt under the tire so it would get some traction. But nothing worked. After about 20 minutes of this and fearing that we were going to be stuck in the middle of the jungle on a road with no cars going by, a small bus of tourists pulled up and saw our plight. They all got out and helped push. Another 20 minutes and the van was free and we were back on our way up the mountain. Fortunately, after all that, we were able to see the volcano erupt so I guess it was worth it.

The scary account of your van mishap is the perfect accompaniment to this image, Charles.
Great shot of the opossum, and I really like the oranges here. Getting stuck like that sure doesn't sound like fun; lucky the bus came by! I look forward to the volcano shots.
Charles Dastodd: Unfortunately I have no shots of the volcano active! I was really disappointed. Arenal is covered with clouds 6 days a week typically and so we felt lucky as it was to see it erupt. The last day there we were lucky that the clouds completely cleared and gave us an unobstructed view of it. But that was during the day and nothing appeared to be happening at that time other than steam.

I have to laugh about this possum, Charles, because we have them in Georgia and as a joke put the meat in tins at sovenir stands and sell them to tourists. Red-neck country. grin
Lovely shot, I'm fascinated by those delicate looking human-like hands.

Its pink paw makes me think of a old lady's hand! It's odd to think how they use man-made objects to their advantage.

Looks as if the volcano is erupting under its backside. Must have been all the chilies smile

Great shot. More hands make light work.
You do a lot of traveling it seems. Good, I can visually go with you. Great closeup of this animal and.. I'm not sure it would look as much like itself if it didn't have glowing eyes due to night photography!
Stuck in the ditch, surrounded by eyes, good job the tourists showed up smile
