Helsinki

The fortress island of Suomenlinna is just off the coast of Helsinki and is a short 20 minute ferry ride from the old market square. This fortress island, originally Sveaborg in Sweedish, was originally constructed by Sweden in 1748 to protect Sweden's eastern borders. It later passed to Russia in 1808 when they took over Finland and then later to Finland when Finland gained independence in 1917. Suomenlinna remained a military base through WWII and finally passed into civilian administration in the 1970s.

I've been to Helsinki, Charles, but didn't see this. It feels like a cozy fortress in that glorious light.

Totally fabulous. Lovely vivid colors and a lovely composition esp with the tree being part of the frame. Good one Charles smile
I'll have to try Finland in the summer, do you like the cuisine? This place looks very interesting.
Looks like a pretty defensible spot, Charles.
What an interesting building.
A sturdy looking fortress indeed and it looks to be well maintained. Nicely shot, Charles.
Good capture and info to go with it. smile

I'd never have thought this was Sweden at all; more France, really. I've never really thought of the Swedes fighting; no idea why not! Beautiful colours in this.
