Chicago's famed Michigan Avenue crossing the Chicago River here, looking south from below street level. The Michigan Avenue Bridge is one of 20 moveable bridges in downtown Chicago. Chicago has around 40 movable bridges in all, making Chicago the movable bridge capital of the world.
The Michigan Ave. Bridge was completed in 1920 and played an important role in the city's planning. It is an example of a fixed trunnion bascule bridge - which later became known as the "Chicago-style bascule". The Chicago-style bascule was so effective that it was copied around the world.
