photoblog image Along the Hooghly

Along the Hooghly

The third in this series of life along the Hooghly River, just north of Kolkata. These children really captivated me as we passed them on the boat. At first I thought they were just playing, but I think they might have been looking for fresh-water animal life. I am not sure, but perhaps someone with more knowledge of the river and area might know.

As you can tell from this photo and some of my other Hooghly River shots (e.g. this one), the tide difference on the river is quite substantial. The average tidal change during monsoon season is about 16feet.

They are not playing for sure. I think they are trying to catch fish or carrying that mud somewhere to build something. For play, they might have preferred some other place.

But I must also say, this is once again an amazing work of photography with lots of insight.
Charles Dastodd: Ah, that makes sense, Ajay. Actually, just out of view of this shot there was some sort of brickworks with men hauling mud or clay or whatever for making bricks. I wondered if these kids might be working at the place.

Brilliant shot. I like this a lot.
You have a great photojournalistic style.

Your inclusion of the bird, children and boat give a nice sense of depth to the entire image.

The land-locked boat reinforces your story about the monsoon season.

Beautiful Image! The composition, POV, DOF, and processing is perfect. To me they look like they are digging in the sand for something - when I was younger we would dig for clams and seashells. Thought to the adult this was work - we really had fun with it and did it for hours.
Charles Dastodd: I used to dig for shellfish, too, whenever I would go visit family around Cape Cod or Rhode Island. So I thought they might be doing something like that. This is of course a fresh water river, so I have no idea what kind of animal life there might be. The people of West Bengal probably eat more fish than anything else. While I was there I had fish curry almost every day, so it would make sense if they were trying to get some fish.

A beautiful earthy image..lovely composition, strong contrast, and beautiful tonalities. What are the children doing? I guess we each make up our own story.
Great shot again. Agree the boat adds a lot. From the looks of it the shot seems to be taken late in the day, hopefully after school.
Charles Dastodd: if the kids go to school at all...it is a very poor area along the river

Interesting and warm tones processed in this capture. A 16-foot differential in tidal change??? Substantial indeed!
Charles Dastodd: Yeah, I don't think I would want to be on the river in monsoon season wink

Fascinating image, really like the tones and the light on the surface. Great angle for this shot along with a great job framing this one. Excellent capture.

I like the long format. A very effective image for the two digging and the bird checking it all out. Fine toning.
I love diagonals in composition and the line from the corner to the birds to the kids and then the boat really adds interest. Super.

A wonderful capture of a timeless scene. My one observation about the composition is that the main figures are too central - a little bit to the left or right and the picture would look more balanced.
Ingrid
Charles Dastodd: Thanks for the suggestion, Ingrid! I think I agree with you.
Wonderful social comment Charles. I believe Ingrid is right about the postioning ...

Very nice realisation !!
Very good job.
So these children are playing where some time later there will be a considerable depth of water then Charles?
Charles Dastodd: well, this was taken in the winter - about 3 weeks ago. and the tide only changes around 4 to 6 feet at most during this time. it is definitely the dry season, although probably still too much for these kids, whether they were working or playing.
