photoblog image The Basin

The Basin

I spent Christmas up in Waterville Valley, New Hampshire in the White Mountains. The skiing was great when we were not having a blizzard! This is a shot I took at a place called "The Basin" in Franconia Notch State Park, a little ways north of Waterville Valley. Hiking in from the road through the snow to get here was only slightly challenging, and but I wish I had my cross-country skis on!!

It was really too light out for a long exposure since I wasn't using a filter. Hence, the snow came out a bit overexposed, but what can you do.

Also, for anyone else on Twitter you can now follow me for updates.

Sounds fabulous Graham. As you say, a difficult shot to get right but you've well in the circumstances. We used to go ski-ing in Banff National Park and one day we finished early to go for a walk along Johnson Cnyon; that was fabulous, too.

I like this Charles: the movement in the water really works for me
That is a good exposure. Snow has to be over exposured otherwise it looks grey. I think you found a good balance in this one.
This is a very nice wintershot Charles!! Love the motion in the water in combination with the snow!! The whitebalence is also very good!
Its a fine shot Charles.
What I like most about this shot is the beautiful colour combination - the white, green and brown smile
oh gosh the snow is just fine lol this is a lovely (and a half) shot!!!
This is wonderful Charles. I like the water motion effect!

Wish you a very happy and prosperous new year smile.
I wouldn't fancy a swim in that pool! You might like to check out a handy filter, the "Fader ND" from Lightcraft Workshop (http://www.lightcraftworkshop.com/site/Home.aspx) - handy enough just to carry around.
Happy New Year to you too my friend, all the best for you, peace and love!!!!!
That's such a beautiful place!
Almost frozen waterfall - WOW!

Wishing you a very happy and prosperous New Year!

It was well worth the effort, Charles... And then some!!! My goodness, what a magnificent and awe inspiring frame. Incredibly beautiful with a wonderful wide 18mm angle and stunning detail. A gem.
Wow! This is a shot and a half, water, snow and ice everywhere in every direction. Fantastic.
Stunning shot in challenging light Charles--love the fluidity of your long exposure here!
Really nice composition and very good work in the details into the darkness zone

Wonderful flow of water.
A very beautiful find there, the water looks
so very clean and the snow looks
clean too. Hope
you didn't have to go too far out of your way to
find such a wonderful location. Superb work.

A great shutter speed, nonetheless to show a flowing movement. The snow seems to take on the resemblance of a bird with its "beak" extending over the water and its outstretched wing from the middle right to the middle top.
That is too beautiful.

Excellent photo and beautiful motion in the water.
Happy New YearÂ’s to you Charles.
Happy New Year !
Considering how difficult it is to manage proper balance between dark and light patches on the same shot, I find it stunning!
It is very interesting to detail: colours, matter, composition!
Beautifully done!
And one last time: Happy New Year!!!!

A lovely winter portrait, Charles, so soft and richly coloured. We've visited the beautiful White Mountain region in the Fall but never during the Winter months. Looking at this image makes me want to make the trip, though.

It doesn't really matter Charles - snow is supposed to be white, and it's not always neccessary to have detail everywhere. Anyway it's a lovely shot.

Best Wishes to you and your family for the New Year.
